The King of Green and the Queen of Green candidates are nominated formally and informally by community members, Chamber of Commerce members, past royalty and Green Days committee members. Those chosen have made a significant contribution to the Johnston Green Days celebration or the community of Johnston.

In 2018, Shane Goodman, the publisher of Johnston Living magazine and the owner of Big Green Umbrella Media, suggested to the Johnston Green Days committee that a King and Queen be named for our community festival. The committee agreed, and Goodman pushed the green theme even further with the tapping of the Green Keg as well. Big Green Umbrella Media has sponsored the crowing of the King and Queen and the tapping of the Green Keg ever since.
